What is Infrastructure?

Infrastructure is defined as the basic facilities, services, and installations needed for the functioning of a community or society, such as transportation and communications systems, water and power lines, and public institutions including schools, post offices, and prisons. Infrastructure is critical for the continuance and growth of a community or government. Government agencies at various levels frequently build and operate such infrastructure, such as water systems, roads, and schools. Green" infrastructure, a growing concern in the 21 st century, encourages green space in cities and towns, minimizes the adverse impacts that rapid growth can have on ecosystem services, and assures that open space and working farms and forests are seen as part of a community's essential assets.
